Ο βρετανός ιστορικός Νάιαλ Φέργκιουσον (πλήρες όνομα: Niall Campbell Douglas Ferguson) γεννήθηκε το 1964 στη Γλασκώβη. Είναι καθηγητής Ιστορίας στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Xάρβαρντ και στο London School of Economics (LSE), μέλος του Κολεγίου Jesus του Πανεπιστημίου της Οξφόρδης και μέλος του Ινστιτούτου Hoover του Πανεπιστημίου του Στάνφορντ. Θεωρείται από τους πιο ανανεωτικούς ιστορικούς της εποχής μας, με ειδίκευση στη διεθνή ιστορία και στην οικονομική ιστορία. Είναι συγγραφέας των βιβλίων: "Paper and Iron: Hamburg Business and German Politics in the Era of Inflation, 1897-1927", 1995, "The Pity of War", 1998, "The House of Rothschild: The World΄s Banker, 1849-1999", 1999, "The Cash Nexus: Money and Power in the Modern World, 1700-2000", 2001, "Empire: How Britain Made the Modern World", 2003, "Colossus: The Rise and Fall of the American Empire", 2004, "The Ascent of Money: A Financial History of the World", 2008, "Civilization: The West and the Rest", 2011, "Great Degeneration", 2012. Αρθρογραφεί στα σημαντικότερα περιοδικά και εφημερίδες του διεθνούς Τύπου ("Time Magazine", "Sunday Telegraph", κ.ά.). Από το 2003 έχει επιμεληθεί και παρουσιάσει πέντε επιτυχημένες σειρές ντοκιμαντέρ για το "Channel Four". Μοιράζεται το χρόνο του μεταξύ Οξφόρδης και Χάρβαρντ μαζί με τη γυναίκα του και τα τρία παιδιά τους.
