Jonathan Swift (Συγγραφέας)

Ο Τζόναθαν Σουίφτ (1667 -1745) γεννήθηκε στο Δουβλίνο της Ιρλανδίας. Εργάστηκε ως γραμματέας του συγγραφέα και διπλωμάτη Σερ Ουίλιαμ Τεμπλ, έγινε ιερέας της αγγλικανικής εκκλησίας, έγραψε μυθιστορήματα και ποιήματα, αλλα ανακατεύτηκε και με την πολιτική. Το πιο γνωστό έργο του είναι το μυθιστόρημα "Τα ταξίδια του Γκιούλιβερ" (ή, σωστότερα: "Γκάλιβερ", του οποίου ο πλήρης τίτλος ήταν: "Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World, in Four Parts, by Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of Several Ships"), στο οποίο σατιρίζει την πολιτική ζωή, τις φιλοσοφικές ιδέες και την επιστήμη της εποχής του. Έγραψε επίσης ποιήματα, σάτιρες, δοκίμια, θρησκευτικά έργα, κηρύγματα, άρθρα, επιστολές και άλλα.
