Η Έμιλυ Τζέιν Μπροντέ γεννήθηκε τον Ιούλιο του 1818 και πέθανε το Δεκέμβριο του 1848. Ήταν ένα από τα έξι παιδιά του πάστορα Πάτρικ Μπροντέ και της Μαρίας Μπράνγουελ. Τα παιδιά μεγάλωσαν στο Χάουγουορθ του Γιορκσάιρ. Οι απανωτοί θάνατοι των αδελφών της επηρέασαν τα γραπτά της. Έγραψε φανταστικές ιστορίες και λυρικά ποιήματα και για λίγο καιρό εργάστηκε ως δασκάλα. Το 1847, ένα χρόνο πριν πεθάνει, εκδόθηκε το μοναδικό της μυθιστόρημα, τα "Ανεμοδαρμένα Ύψη", όπου εμφανίζεται με το ψευδώνυμο Έλλις Μπελ. Στην κηδεία του αδελφού της Μπράνγουελ κρυολόγησε, το κρυολόγημα εξελίχθηκε σε φυματίωση και πέθανε σε ηλικία 30 χρονών.
