Ο Έντγκαρ Άλαν Πόε γεννήθηκε στη Βοστώνη το 1809, από γονείς θεατρίνους. Πριν κλείσει τα δύο του χρόνια, οι γονείς του πέθαναν, και ο Έντγκαρ βρέθηκε στο Ρίτσμοντ, στο σπίτι του εμπόρου Τζων Άλλαν, που όμως δεν τον υιοθέτησε ποτέ. Οι σχέσεις του με τον πατριό του δεν ήταν ποτέ καλές, αλλά επιδεινώθηκαν όταν ο Άλλαν ανάγκασε τον Έντγκαρ να διακόψει τις σπουδές του στο πανεπιστήμιο της Βιρτζίνια, επειδή δεν ήταν διατεθειμένος να αναλάβει τα έξοδά του. Το 1830 ο Έντγκαρ μπήκε στη Στρατιωτική Ακαδημία του Γουέστ Πόιντ, απ΄ όπου αποπέμφθηκε τον επόμενο χρόνο προκαλώντας επίτηδες σκάνδαλο για να εκδικηθεί τον πατριό του. Δούλεψε έπειτα για ένα μεγάλο διάστημα σε διάφορες εφημερίδες του Ρίτσμοντ, της Φιλαδέλφειας και της Νέας Υόρκης, για λόγους βιοποριστικούς, αλλά κατακτώντας παράλληλα τη φήμη του έγκυρου κριτικού. "Το Κοράκι και άλλα ποιήματα", που κυκλοφόρησε το 1845, τον καθιέρωσε εν μια νυκτί ως συγγραφέα, χωρίς όμως να του ανακουφίσει τη φτώχεια στην οποία είχε ζήσει όλη την ως τότε ζωή του. Το 1836 παντρεύτηκε τη δεκατετράχρονη εξαδέλφη του Βιρτζίνια, που πέθανε φυματική έντεκα χρόνια αργότερα. Πέθανε το 1849, αλκοολικός και οπιομανής κυνηγώντας διαρκώς το όραμα της χαμένης Βιρτζίνια, και τάφηκε δίπλα της στη Βαλτιμόρη, όπως το επιθυμούσε.
