Ο Χαρούκι Μουρακάμι, που θεωρείται ένας από τους μεγαλύτερους σύγχρονους Ιάπωνες συγγραφείς, γεννήθηκε στο Κιότο το 1949. Γνωρίστηκαν με τη γυναίκα του τη Γιόκο στο πανεπιστήμιο κι άνοιξαν στο Τόκιο ένα τζαζ κλαμπ με το όνομα Peter Cat. Η τεράστια επιτυχία του μυθιστορήματός του "Norwegian Wood" (1987) τον έκανε διάσημο στη χώρα του. Ύστερα εγκατέλειψε την Ιαπωνία κι επέστρεψε το 1995. Ακολούθησαν τα βιβλία: "Hard-boiled Wonderland and The End of the World", "The Elephant Vanishes", "Dance Dance Dance", "The Wind-up Bird Chronicle", "South of the Border, West of the Sun", "Underground" (το πρώτο δοκιμιακό του έργο), "A Wild Sheep Chase", "Sputnic Sweetheart", "After the Quake", "Kafka on the Shore" (μυθιστόρημα, 2005), "Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman" (διηγήματα, 2006) και "After Dark" (μυθιστόρημα, 2007). Η αυτοβιογραφία του, που με τίτλο "What I Talk About When I Talk About Running", υπογραμμίζει με ειρωνικό τρόπο τις οφειλές του στον Ρέιμοντ Κάρβερ, αναμένεται να εκδοθεί στα αγγλικά τον Ιούλιο του 2008. Έχει μεταφράσει στα ιαπωνικά έργα του Φ. Σκοτ Φιτζέραλντ, του Τρούμαν Καπότε, του Τζον Ίρβινγκ και του Ρέιμοντ Κάρβερ. Η πιο πρόσφατη από πολλές διακρίσεις του είναι το βραβείο Yomiuri Literary Prize, με το οποίο έχουν τιμηθεί επίσης, στο παρελθόν, οι Γιούκιο Μισίμα, Κενζαμπούρο Όε και Κόμπο Αμπέ.
